This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I would like to provide mini iPads for students in my high schools English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. The media center will house these devices and check them out for the year to our English Language Learner (ELL) students. As the media specialist, I will provide this technology and training on use to our ELL students and their teachers, ensuring the best opportunities for success. The ESOL mini iPad grant was initiated to help our ELLs accelerate their development of communication and literacy skills to help promote their English proficiency. These students will benefit from the mini iPads and downloaded apps to strengthen their English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. This technology can help address the varied learning styles for our ELL students by helping their teachers provide them differentiated instruction. A mini iPad is both personal and inconspicuous; unlike the bigger Chromebooks that students are assigned, I want our ELLs who will use these devices to not feel singled out while using them with their peers and teachers.

The goal of our ELL students using a mini iPad for classwork and social interactions is that they can see their accomplishments and receive validation for the work they put forth.

Research shows it can take five years for the average child learning a new language to acquire the academic language necessary to succeed in school. Using iPads and appropriate apps, the ELL student will engage in interactive language activities, receive immediate translation support, and participate more fully in class discussions, ultimately enhancing their language acquisition and academic performance.

Our school currently has 20 mini iPads in use that were purchased from previous local grants; however, we continue to enroll more non-English speaking ELL students who are on a waiting list and would greatly benefit from this technology.
