Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in grades sixth, seventh and eighth. We are a Title I school and the majority of the students are on free and reduced price lunch. Many of my students come from single parent households, a significant percentage are recent immigrants and participate in our ESOL program.

Regardless of their background and home situation, it is my unique task to provide opportunities to expose these student to sports starting with the fundamentals as well as introduce new, challenging skills while reinforcing and maintaining previously learned ones.

My students, eagerly look forward to attending my class, engaging in cooperative groups and after school sport clubs such as Soccer and Basketball. The students navigate challenges daily at they navigate to school so creating after school competitive sports is away for them have an outlet far as releasing mental stress.

Ongoing physical activity is directly related to stress management, weight control, increase focus, as well as, learning the essential skill of cooperative learning. In addition, through team sports, students can learn the most vital social emotional skills for life.

My Project

I am requesting goals, cones, scrimmage vests and protective gear to wear while playing soccer. In order to promote school pride and connectivity, I am excited as this is the first year our school will be offering soccer as an extracurricular sport for our students. This is an opportunity for students to connect with each other beyond the classroom, bond with their peers and ideally build lasting relationships.

Students will learn the fundamentals of playing soccer, safety practices, use of safety gear to protect their bodies while increasing social emotional skills and self confidence on and off the soccer field.

After tryouts, and the team is selected, the students will use the protective gear, and colored team practice shirts during practices and games if needed. This will provide uniformity and boost team spirit. The practice goal with assist with fundamentals and the cones will serve as reminders of boundaries. Finally, having multiple balls will allow the student to practice in smaller groups.
