Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students have all faced tremendous obstacles. 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch. All of the students who attend New Directions Secondary School have repeated at least one grade for some reason or another. 45% of our students receive special education services. 40% of our students receive ELL services. About 25% of our students live in shelters across NYC. With these obstacles, these students continue to show up for us. We want to make school a welcoming place, a place where they can feel safe. The school is in the poorest congressional district in the country, students come in at a wide range of academic levels. As a teacher, I make every effort to give them many opportunities to extend their work to higher levels and to raise the bar on their own personal expectations. They are welcome in my class for extra help or just a quiet place to work during any free periods of the day. I also strive to provide extra support for students struggling with basic numeracy and extra enrichment for students who are ready to take their work to the next level.

My Project

We are requesting support to help our students become fluent with their math skills. This will support our current curriculum. Students will be able to explore other ways related to many of the concepts they will be studying in class.

Too often, math taught in school seems boring and distant from students' own experiences--students rarely have the opportunity to experience the beauty and excitement of what mathematicians really do on a daily basis.

Having these computers will enable our students to different kinds of experiences that truly make learning exciting for students.
