Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

A reading center in my 8th grade ELA classroom can significantly benefit my students by fostering a love for reading and enhancing their literacy skills. By providing a dedicated space for independent and guided reading, a reading center encourages students to explore various genres, improve comprehension, build vocabulary, and develop a life-long love for reading.

The reading corner can be tailored to support diverse learning needs by offering differentiated texts that cater to varying reading levels and interests, and ensures all students are engaged and challenged appropriately.

This specifically is beneficial for my classroom that supports a diverse group of ELL students with meeting reading benchmarks and proficiency goals.

The reading center will benefit my students by providing my co-teacher and I with the capacity to promote independent reading, support targeted instruction, encourage collaborative learning, and build confidence and motivation in my students' reading abilities. By integrating this reading center into my classroom, my goal is to create a dynamic environment that not only meets English Language Arts standards but also fosters a genuine love for reading.

My students are deserving of an opportunity to engage in literacy in this way, because many of my students may not have access to libraries or a variety of novels to read at home. My hope is that this reading corner will cultivate a desire of reading which will push them to improve their reading abilities, encourage them to begin thinking critically about the world around them, and become encouraged to be change agents in this world. Being from New York, a vibrant and culturally rich environment, my students bring a variety of perspectives, languages, and traditions to the classroom, making it a dynamic and inclusive learning community. I am excited to see what else they contribute to literacy through this reading corner.
