Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in public school in the Bronx, not too far from where I grew up and went to school. My students remind me a lot of myself. They are eager, inquisitive, and have a passion for learning. Each day they come to school with a brightness in their eyes for knowledge and with curiosity to see what the new day will hold for them. They are so brave, so much has changed since I was their age and grew up in the surrounding neighborhood. They are my motivation and inspiration. They let me know that "darkness can't drive out darkness, only light can do that". They are the light.

My Project

These books will help spark the interest of my struggling readers.

My students love going to the classroom library and my goal is for them to continue to love going there.

Their interests are changing every day and I want our library to reflect their new interests. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading fluency, vocabulary and background knowledge.

My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. I have brought titles like these from my own children at home to put in my library and I have watched how they flock to these books. I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time and bring back the fun in reading.
