Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in one of the largest middle schools in NYC located in Queens. My school is a multicultural Title I school, where all students are given free breakfast and lunch. Due to the global pandemic, many of their families struggle with finding jobs or are working multiple jobs, to give their children the basic home essentials and school supplies needed for them to succeed. Many of my students have not mastered the English language yet, or are far below reading level. I am trying to help instill a love of reading, writing and self expression in them.

My students are some of the most curious, talented, avid readers and creative writers.

Their love of reading inspires many of them to immerse themselves with a great book. With more resources, I hope to foster, instill and encourage a continuous passion for reading and an outlet for my students to express themselves creatively and artistically.

My Project

These books will help my students continue their interest and love of reading. They will be using these as independent reading books, both in school and at home. These books will help me establish libraries in each of my three classrooms, as the children stay in one room all day.

These books will be used in school and at home to analyze characterization, practice summarizing, and break down the many features a novel could have.

The titles of these specific books were on a wish list of titles created by some of my students.
