This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in an area of the Bronx that is ridden with poverty. It is heartbreaking to see the effects of such poverty first hand. Some cannot afford simple things usually taken for granted such as pencils, backpacks or even winter jackets to keep them warm in the cold weather. Some arrive hungry because they were not able to eat a meal for dinner the night before.
Despite the hand they were dealt, our students are brimming with curiosity and an overall excitement for learning.
They love coming to school each day since for most this is the only form of structure in their lives. I try to make each day as fun and engaging as possible for them to help keep that excitement going.
I’d like to spark that excitement right from the beginning of the school year by using unique classroom furniture to create an environment that’s not only conducive to learning, but can provide a sense of home for my students. Some of my first graders will come into the school year having never been exposed to a kindergarten and will leave as readers and writers. I’d like to give them a year they’ll always remember!
My Project
These materials will be used to create an aesthetically pleasing reading space in our classroom that will in turn motivate students to want to read and increase their reading stamina.
Our school is in one of the poorest districts in the Bronx and most of our students lack access to basic resources that many take for granted.
Having this space in the classroom to spark a love for reading from an early age will be crucial to my students’ success and hopefully help bridge the gap caused by living at or below the poverty level. Please help my students reach their fullest potential!!
