This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach English and Robotics to a very diverse group of students. Many of them come from broken homes and broken communities. Our school is comprised of 72% African American and 20% English-Language Learners. My English classes are mostly 9th graders preparing to rock high school, and my Robotics classes are 9th-12th graders doing project-based learning.
I want my students to go forward with a sense of accomplishment for completing high school, which some parents didn't.
I want them to leave me knowing they're better prepared to meet the challenges the future has for them.
My Project
Even the most responsible builders lose parts to breakage, stripping out, and just unfortunate circumstances. My Robotics class is very lucky to have robots that were provided by the JROTC at our school, but over time, some parts have been customized to specific builds, lost, or destroyed.
These robot kits need refreshed!
This year's students deserve to have access to all the parts they think they need to build their robots to meet the challenges set forth in my class. It is hard to build a robot if you have to count screws, and there aren't enough to create strong connections.
More than half of students from low‑income households
