My students come from a diverse economic background. We are a rural school near a city and get a diverse group of personalities as well. We have our hometown kids who have lived here all their lives. We have our country boys and kids who are in town for school, church and groceries, but keep it to the farm and tractors most of the time. We have city kids that move in from all over who have parents looking for a new start. A large group of our students come to us as just a quick stop before their parent(s) are based somewhere else and they head off to another new school in their educational journey.
Our school population is always changing and yet always feels like home.
My students are exploring the Spanish speaking world and taking it beyond the classroom as they gain confidence. First, they begin to get excited because they understood a family at the grocer store. Their comprehension levels are high. Now we are working on trusting the words we know and speaking with our local Spanish speaking population more. I am enjoying hearing their stories of the Spanish they used over the summer!
My Project
It will be amazing to have the supplies needed to respond in a variety of ways in the classroom. From board races demonstrating memorization of key vocabulary to summarizing the story they are hearing. The students will use the markers to produce Spanish on a communicative level.
We use markers on personal white boards to respond, check and edit work.
We use them to draw storylines during the reading or telling of a short story. We use them in silent row races that become a little less silent as at the time ticks away! Students feeling shy? They can respond in Spanish on their boards when asked, "Qué hiciste este fin de semana?"
