Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Reading, writing, speaking, listening, and learning about the culture in Spanish speaking countries is what students are expected to learn in Advanced Placement Spanish Language. The course is at the college level and these pupils need as much exposure to realistic literature. There are juniors (11th graders) and seniors (12th graders) in the AP course and they chose to enroll in the class. It is a challenging curriculum as many of the students, while they grew up speaking the language at home, have had limited exposure to written pieces. I teach at a public school. It is a low socioeconomic area where parents have limited resources and do not necessarily have the means to subscribe to magazines, hence, limiting students' exposure to literary pieces outside of the classroom.

AP Spanish Language students will take an examination in May. One of the requirements on the test is reading and answering comprehension questions, writing an essay, and making an oral presentation. Some of the pieces that they are expected to read are articles from newspapers and/or magazines. The magazine subscriptions listed on the wish list are in Spanish and/or represent the Hispanic culture.

In order to have realistic pieces to read, I have requested a donation of subscriptions to magazines such as "ESPN en Espanol", "Latina", and "Tu Ciudad-Los Angeles", in order to have a plethora of resources in the classroom. Since some students finish their work early, going to the reading corner and checking out a magazine is a good way to expose them to current events, vocabulary, and the practices and perspectives relevant to the Hispanic culture. Also, these magazines will help students develop their interest in reading, which I have always felt is important, regardless of the situation. One of the state standards for the Foreign Languages is that students will show evidence of becoming life-long learners by using Spanish for personal enjoyment and enrichment. This would definitely help meet that requirement.

Your generous donation will make it possible for students to read well-written pieces that will help guide them in their own writing, inspire future writers, and instill a love for reading as well as help practice a most valuable skill, reading.
