My Students

My students are high school students in Spanish I and II classes in a rural community. Though they may have different interests, be in different grades and come from different homes, my students through the course of the year become a close family. Due to the communicative nature of our class, they end up interacting with each other, learning about each other, and understanding each other maybe a little more. They also do a great job at creating some fun, memorable moments along the way!

While my students are different from one another, cultural diversity is not a prominent characteristic among my students or our school’s student population.

Sharing aspects of a different language and culture with students who are not exposed to those opportunities everyday is a privilege. Books open new worlds to my students. My students living in a one-stoplight county can open a book and peer into a Peruvian jungle or maybe even drive through a busy street in Madrid, and they can be learning Spanish while they do it!

My Project

I have commented many times over the last couple of years, since the challenges of Covid-19 began, that learning has felt disjointed. On any given day, I am conducting class in-person with a portion of my students in class while a portion of my students are in their homes with their chrome book trying to gain what they need from a google meet. I am trying to give those at home a similar experience to what those in class are receiving, but I am unsure if that is actually happening.

In considering what might help my students learn during this time, it seems that a simple motivational tool might be a step in the right direction; what better time to introduce the Spanish language library that I have always wanted to give them?

I would love to give my Spanish I and II students a library with comprehensible Spanish books in which they can read for enjoyment, explore other cultures, have new adventures, and gain understanding of new vocabulary along the way. Hearing the language and reading it are both imperative to language acquisition. While textbooks do provide some reading opportunities, having a variety of books available to my students would enable them to make literary choices according to their interests, thus motivating them to (possibly without even knowing it!) acquire the language.

I teach high school students in Spanish I and II. We are in a rural area. There is very little cultural diversity represented where we live. Spanish class and the books contained there are a convenient and enjoyable way to not only acquire a different language, but gain insights into different cultures as well.
