Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, our school created several classes for Spanish heritage speakers. One of the things that endears my students to me is their sense of community and respect for one another. My tenth and eleventh grade students are engaging and kind, but they have jobs and plans, and for some, school is already secondary. My 9th graders are at a key point in life where they either learn to love school or start dreaming of a paycheck.

Although their backgrounds and interests are diverse and their upbringings range from streetwise caretaker to pampered only child, they radiate care and concern for one another.

Their SRI scores seem low to me, especially when I witness their intelligence and ingenuity. Most of them speak and understand Spanish fluently, but a few have never read a book in their native tongue. What they do understand, is the mutual experience they share of trying to travel between different worlds and languages when they walk out the front door each morning.

My Project

There is a huge range of language abilities in my heritage speakers Spanish class.

Although we do a lot of scaffolded lessons, we still need more activities for advanced or struggling students.

. Some students were raised in foreign countries and need more advanced lessons, particularly if they attended school in these countries. Some speak only Spanish at home but English elsewhere. Some only speak Spanish with grandparents. And some understand Spanish, but need more practice speaking. I have been purchasing supplemental activities to help challenge students based on their skills, and I have found a lot of resources created by other teachers. This project will help fund ongoing purchases from Teachers Pay Teachers.
