Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hurricane Sandy left our students without anything. We went from our beautifully furnished rooms in our home school to empty spaces at a new school; from having a home, to being homeless. They came to a new school not knowing what to expect in an unknown neighborhood with a very bad reputation.

Our students are very smart adolescents who attend an accelerated New York City public school.

They are very eager to learn and dedicated to their education. Under these dire circumstances, they are very worried how lack of resources and time lost will affect their scores on exams. Our students are compassionate, cooperative, respectful, and responsible.

My Project

The resources that I ask for are to be able to re-create our colorful, warm, inviting, and educational classroom to restore a sense of normalcy to their lives. Also, the Advanced Placement Spanish books will allow our AP students to continue to excel towards a 5! The dictionaries will help our students have some point of reference in their writing.

Restoring what is normal to our students will serve them as an escape to their harsh reality.

Some students had to relocate and are living in overcrowded homes without privacy, others are in shelters, and some are courageous enough to remain in their homes without electricity or heat. Coming to school is the only thing left "normal" and I am trying to make it as "normal" as possible.
