My Students

My school is a consolidated school district that covers small, rural communities, and quiet farms. Some of my students travel long distances to school; others live right down the street.

My students are inquisitive scholars.

In a small school, students have the opportunity to try new skills without tremendous pressure. They multitask. They have big hearts and want to help others. They like to try new things.

My students are quixotic. They want to understand and influence the world around them, while at the same time staying close to home and the surroundings that make sense to them.

My Project

Studies show that reading for pleasure lowers stress, increases memory and focus, and helps us build our vocabulary and imagination. Our curriculum has an increased focus on this type of reading, but for my Spanish-speaking students, it creates a challenge. If they "read for pleasure" in an English book, they find themselves reading Dr. Seuss or something similar.

When high school students read for pleasure, they don't want to read books written for first graders!

Sometimes it is nice to be able to read for enjoyment, but my Spanish speaking students need books in their primary language for that! I have some books, but I need more.
