This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

For bilingual students with disabilities, reading in their native language is not only a way to build literacy skills, but it also plays a crucial role in developing their overall academic success. In a self-contained classroom, where students often face additional challenges, providing books in Spanish offers an opportunity for them to engage deeply with the material and access content in a language they are most comfortable with. Research shows that when students can read in their first language, they are better able to develop their cognitive and literacy skills, which then transfer to learning in English. By donating to this project, you are helping create a learning environment where bilingual students can thrive.

Books in their native language help students feel confident and empowered, particularly in a classroom where they may already feel isolated or discouraged.

Spanish-language books allow students to connect with the content more effectively, leading to better comprehension, stronger vocabulary, and a deeper appreciation for reading. Furthermore, having access to Spanish books encourages students to embrace their cultural heritage, fostering a sense of pride and belonging. It’s vital that students with disabilities—especially those in self-contained classrooms—have access to the right resources to meet their unique learning needs.
