Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach Spanish Dual Immersion to 35 5th graders at a school with an amazing Dual Immersion program. Students in the progrm are both English Learners and English only students who wish to become bilingual. My students have started their journey in becoming bilingual in English and Spanish since they were in Kindergarten. Now in 5th grade, there are a variety of different proficiencies in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in Spanish and English.

My students are ready to be challenged as they continue to become literate in two languages.

They learn content and work on projects and activities in both English and Spanish. Together, they have built a great classroom community with a shared common goal, to be bilingual and use it in their future endeavors.

My Project

My students get excited to listen to read alouds or read independently, especially culturally diverse books. A variety of Spanish books will give them that, plus more practice in their Spanish reading skills.

With these new books, my students will have be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read at their level in Spanish.

I plan to include them in my classroom library when Distance Learning is changed to Hybrid Learning. In the meantime, I will provide read aloud lessons through our classes and students will be able to discuss books with me and with each other, all in Spanish. The books will definitely bring a positive impact for my bilingual students.
