Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"He's touching me!" "She's not sitting in her spot." "I can't see!" These are complaints I hear from my first graders as we gather to the front of the room for a lesson. We need a classroom sized carpet and teaching easel to give every student a comfortable place to learn and work collaboratively.

My students are a group of hardworking first graders that attend a Title I school in vibrant Brooklyn, New York.

These growing readers, writers, mathematicians, artists and scientists are made up from a wonderfully diverse set of backgrounds with varying access to resources.

My Project

We are requesting a large classroom rug and a teaching easel to be used during whole group lessons. We would like to gather on the floor in front of the easel for morning meetings, writing lessons, reading time, math mini-lessons and other activities. The large cozy carpet would also allow our students to sit on the floor during centers, for independent reading and partner work. Being able to step away from the desks, and assemble as a class helps build a strong and caring community.

My students need both the classroom sized rug and teaching easel to help them stay focused on their learning instead of worrying about where they will sit and so our lessons are visible to all.

Minimizing distractions and increasing their focus is optimal for helping first graders learn and grow.
