My Students

Thank you for reading my proposal. I am excited about the opportunity to provide astronomy hands-on activities. Many areas of science such as chemistry and physics are easy to incorporate hands-on activities. Astronomy is more difficult since most everything we study is not within reach. Yet, it is so

I teach Science and an elective Aerospace course at a rural middle school in western Washington.

My school serves bright and motivated children from grades 6-8. As a NASA Explorer School, we utilize space science as a way to engage students in science excellence.

My Project

My students need a meteorite poster and meteorite impact modeling materials which include clay, flour, sugar, cocoa, candy, and pans. My students will construct models of the moon's surface. A baking tray will keep the materials in a confined space. Students will fill the pan with 2 inches of granulated sugar to simulate the surface of the moon. Clay rocks will be placed in an uneven distribution on top of the sugar. A layer of cocoa will be sifted over the sugar in an uneven distribution. The cocoa represents the maria on the moon. Finally, a layer of flour will be sifted on top of the layers to simulate the powdery surface and the younger, lighter colored highlands.Students will construct and launch meteors. The meteors will be fashioned out of modeling clay,popcorn, and various sizes of candy. Students will analyze the craters left by each meteorite. Students will examine a map of the moon and hypothesize as to the object that left each known crater by correlating their measurements.

Your support will enable my students to use modeling to learn about and analyze meteorites and craters.

By engaging in hands-on simulations, students will gain an in-depth understanding of processes in space. Thank you for considering this proposal.
