Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach AP Computer Science, an Arizona State University Cloud Computing Course, and Intro to Programming to high school seniors. My students have really responded to the curricula, and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 8 years. After our capstone project in Intro to Programming [Creating Animated Short Films in JavaScript] and after the AP Computer Science Principles Test in APCSP, I leveraged a unit focused on Technology in Space, and we spent time exploring NASA simulations. I am hoping to further improve this unit with space-themed Legos.

The space theme to these lego sets will improve engagement and enhance the overall theme of the unit around space, exploration, and technology, and Lego-based unplugged activities mixed into this unit will be incredibly beneficial for my students.

We take tours of the robust 3D simulator, Eyes on our Solar System, which was developed by NASA, and we consider how programmers constructed this incredible tool. Students actively dissect and discuss the way programmers use key concepts like sequence, selection, iteration, encapsulation, abstraction, functions, objects, output, and user-input in this amazing program. I believe engagement and understanding of these concepts will stem from student Lego modeling, allowing students to consider and create protocols and, in turn, to play with the key CS concepts like modularity and decomposition. These sets will also be beneficial in helping my students engage in the iterative design process in a different way, beyond usual software development.

These Lego sets will be accessible to all of my students, including my ENL students and students with IEPs, giving them all an enhanced level of engagement in analyzing content choice and programming structures and scripts, and enabling physical experiences with key CS concepts. Thank you for your time and consideration!
