Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My school has a beautiful, though neglected, school garden. It has planter boxes, fruit trees, a shed with tools, shady benches, and a fence around the entire space. Several local organizations also support schools with plant starts and seeds throughout the year. Unfortunately, our garden is overgrown with weeds, and students at our school are not currently benefitting from this space at all.

Our garden space deserves to be cared for, and students deserve to experience it!

I am teaching a new transitional kindergarten (TK) class this year, and together, we would like to adopt our school garden as one of our primary learning spaces. We will organize a volunteer workday to clear out the weeds. I would like to put some "indoor" classroom items outdoors to turn our garden into a place where a whole class can comfortably spend most of their day, which is why I am requesting an outdoor rug, child-sized outdoor tables with umbrellas for shade, an outdoor book display, as well as some replacement garden supplies like watering cans and aprons. I believe that all children deserve access to nature, that learning happens everywhere, and that a school garden is ideal for hands-on, experiential learning.

My class will take over the daily gardening tasks of weeding, watering, pest patrol, etc, to make sure that our fixed-up garden stays that way, and we will also use the garden as a setting for outdoor exploration, experiencing the seasons, observing living things, active/messy/risky play opportunities, and social-emotional learning. The requested materials will make it easy and comfortable for us to take any and all learning outdoors! Hopefully, having a refreshed garden space will inspire other classes to take their learning to the garden as well! A garden classroom for all!
