Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Queremos aprender sobre México - We want to learn about México! In Summer 2010, I traveled to México on a Fulbright-Hays Seminar Abroad for educators to learn about the country. Upon my return, I designed a unit to teach my students about México, but we need accompanying books.

My class is made up of third graders in a New York public school who go home to houses, apartments or shelters with little to no materials to succeed in school.

This dedicated third grade class is located in an extremely low-income community, where 100% of students receive free lunch. My students want to do well and want to learn as much as they can, but barely have the resources to do so.

My Project

My Fulbright-Hays unit is titled "México: I can do it too!" and is comprised of 11 lessons that allow students to get an interactive experience when studying Mexico. For example, when learning about indigenous clothing in rural México, students will see pictures that I took, and then design similar clothing for their own paper dolls. For each lesson of my unit - one on geography, two on history, seven on cultural awareness, and one celebration - I have created similar interactive activities to help teach all learning styles. To accompany each lesson, I have also identified children's picture books that relate to the day's activity. So after the lesson on clothing, students would hear a read aloud, "What Can You Do with a Rebozo? Que Puede Hacer Con Un Rebozo?" by Carmen Tafolla. However, while my unit plan calls for 11 read alouds and a few other books for students to reference, we do not have these materials. The books you donate to our classroom will directly support this unit.

By making a donation to this project, you will completely complement the unit I created, giving a perspective to the lessons that the discussions and activities do not provide.

But this project is not just for my class, this unit is being provided to the nine other third grade classes in my school, and the books will be passed to them as well. So, not only will this wonderful collection of books on México directly support the students in my class, but over 200 third graders at my school!
