Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am continually impressed and inspired by the students that I serve. Coming from South Los Angeles, my students face daily challenges and obstacles that could prevent them from succeeding both through high school and further on into their futures (college, career, etc.).

Many of the students in my school came to the United States at a very young age as their family fled from other countries searching for a better life for themselves and their children.

Almost all of the students in my school will be first-generation college attendees and are working incredibly hard to achieve these goals for themselves, and also for their families.

I serve a small school; we have around total 350 students. This is an excellent environment to give students personalized attention and absolutely helps to give our school the feeling that we are actually a family, all working towards a common goal; the success of each student we serve.

My Project

The students in South Central Los Angeles have a passion for nature that has only begun to be fully realized through our trips outdoors. This year, the students have participated in three group hikes and two group camping trips, where students got to experience first-hand the importance and preciousness of our natural world.

Through these trips, our students have become passionate advocates for nature and its protection.

Integrating the week long trip to Yosemite National Park into their environmental science curriculum has solidified the students' connections with wilderness and their own conscientiousness regarding the impact that their decisions have on the world around them.

My goal as the adviser of the Wilderness Leadership Club is to provide students with the materials and opportunities to further explore their connections to the outdoors. My students have an enormous capacity and interest in protecting our natural world - these tents and sleeping bags will help them develop and internalize those ideals.
