My Students

Our typical day consists of students attending and participating in all their classes prior to our soccer practice. Unfortunately, our school does not have a proper gym. Thus, our soccer team walks several miles to the nearest local park located by the Yankee stadium in the south Bronx. Once we arrive, our students change clothes and begin our warm-ups led by the coach and the team captain. We practice 3-4 times a week until the sun goes down and it’s too dark to be outside. Our goal by the end of the school year is to ready and prepared for the upcoming soccer season which begins as early as August. Our biggest challenges in accomplishing this goal is the fact that we do not have a proper space to practice, our students cannot afford proper equipment, and our school is limited in funding. A quote that encompasses our team is: "The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.” ― Nelson Mandela

My students are mostly comprised of students from Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Mexico, Peru, and the United States.

They are the true definition of a team, walking to classes and throughout the hallways of our school together as a group. Our boys’ soccer team is known throughout our school as the closest group of any team, consistently helping each other with their academics, and practicing together after school. They speak numerous languages and constantly joke around with each other when they try teaching each other their native language. Our school is considered a small school in the south Bronx. We share the building with another high school, limiting our space and resources (such as the sharing gym space). We have stellar, dedicated groups of teachers that volunteer and facilitate after school programs. Although our funding is limited, we try to provide our students with as many extra-curricular activities outside the classroom.

My Project

As a soccer coach, I will be able to use these resources to better facilitate practices and scrimmages after school, and better prepare our team to compete in the upcoming Varsity league season. Due to limited soccer balls and safety equipment (such as shin guards and goalie gloves), not all of our students can participate in our work outs. By receiving these supplies, all our players will be able to practice with a soccer ball during our workouts, leaving no one behind or unprepared. In addition, safety is a significant part of sports, and as a coach I have to do whatever it takes to protect my players from injuries. This is why our players require shin guards and goalie gloves as a method to prevent injury and give them and their parents a sense reassurance and protection. Having these supplies will help our students learn that it takes hard work and dedication in order to earn even the most basic of needs and equipment. Our students will learn to appreciate the support and assistance others provide them and use that as an intrinsic value they can carry with them long after they graduate from school.

As a teacher and former alumni of our school, I am privileged to have the opportunity to coach our Boys Varsity Soccer Team.

As a small school located in the South Bronx, our students did not have the opportunity to compete in the New York City League known as PSAL. In order to prove to the organization we deserve this opportunity, I created a soccer club consisting of over 20 high school boys, dedicated to participating in daily practices and scrimmage games at our local park for an entire year. As a result, we were finally invited to be a part of PSAL. Our team is rich in diversity, consisting of players from Ghana, Gambia, Nigeria, Mexico, Peru, and the United States. We developed a positive team culture that revolves around team work, resiliency, strong work ethic, and a competitive spirit. Our first year competing in the Varsity league, our team finished with a record of 7 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw, giving us a playoff berth in our very first year! Although we lost in the Semi-Finals, we were so proud of our accomplishments despite our limited resources. From playing without proper gear to spray painting numbers on white t-shirts due to lack of funding for uniforms, our boys are a special group of students who overcame those limitations while simultaneously keeping high grades in school. In our second year competing we made it to the playoffs again, but we realized how essential and necessary simple equipment can be. We need the help of a Donor who can support the hard work and dedication of our boys, and provide us with the most basic needs in order for us to compete at a higher level in our upcoming season. Please, help us in our cause! Our students deserve basic equipment in order to build on from our recent years of commitment and love for the game of soccer! Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance!
