Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a largely Latino neighborhood in the South Bronx. Academics alone do not always motivate middle schoolers, and our language learners and special ed students really benefit from other ways to connect to school. We want to prepare our student-athletes for competitive athletics programs in High School, which hopefully can then provide other opportunities for success as they determine their college and career goals.

Our students are proud to represent their school in the field, and we continue to build a positive school culture around athletics.

We are teaching students how to hold themselves accountable for their grades, attendance, and behavior.

The baseball program was the first new sport that I introduced when I began teaching at the school 4 years ago, and we have improved both on and off the field each year. Our returning players are extra motivated after a heart-breaking semi-final loss last season. Three of my graduates have joined top tier baseball programs in their respective high schools around the city, and with ten 8th graders on the team this year, the expectation is that many more will play competitive high school ball next year!

My Project

Our baseball team is currently practicing indoors with limited resources and no ability to see real pitching until our season begins in late March. We have minimal funding for equipment other than some donations from the league. I mostly spend money out of pocket in order to replace wood bats, baseballs, etc., which commonly are broken or lost.

These baseball training supplies will allow us to get a head start on our competition and allow our players to be prepared for years to come!

Some of our players have played for years, while others are brand new to the game. All of them need significant practice reps in order to compete at a high level. We have no batting cage, so the pitching machine that throws soft baseballs will allow the kids to see live pitches without needing nets or putting anyone in danger. It will allow us to practice more efficiently in the small gym space that we use before school every week. The bats will be a great way to start the season. Wood bats, unfortunately, break quite often, which creates high costs throughout the season.

Playing baseball on our team requires a major commitment from our students and coaches. We travel all over the Bronx by subway and bus in order to play against other middle schools. The training equipment will help me get the kids in shape as we focus on exercise and nutrition on top of working on our hitting, fielding, and throwing skills. This equipment will make our training more focused, and allow us the resources we need to take our game to the next level!
