My Students

My school is an urban middle school where almost all of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 30 percent are learning English which impacts their academic performance.

I teach a life skills classroom where all of my students perform several grade levels below on standardized tests and vary drastically in their needs and abilities.

Many of my students have not learned the tools needed for appropriately regulating their emotions. It is my goal for them to learn the skills needed to live independently once they are adults. Each of my students is unique and holds a special place in my heart!

My Project

I teach in an all inclusive life skills classroom. We go as a class daily to our school's intermediate choir. This has been an invaluable experience for my students. They have grown as young adults, become more comfortable with themselves, gained many social skills, made new friends, and participated in the choir performances & musicals.

Music tends to be one of the top motivators for children with special needs; it is a multi-sensory experience and is nonverbal.

Participating as a volunteer in Performing Arts Abroad will allow me to learn more about different music and cultures which I can then utilize in my classroom. I will be able to share my stories, show pictures, and play South African music for my students. I will be able to apply my gained knowledge into social studies, reading, writing, and music lessons. It will make me a more well-rounded person and expose my students to sights and stories they would have not otherwise experienced.
