Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first year, 6th grade teacher in an inner city elementary school. For many of my students school is a safe zone, a sanctuary, a break, a place where they can be a child and be themselves.
Are you the type of person that listens to music as a stress reliever, or one that enjoys it because you can relate to it? If you are either one of these, then you can understand how important music is to my students. They listen to it whenever possible. It helps them to relax and soothes them. They can relate to the lyrics and it makes them feel like others understand their situations.
What better way to combine a concept that students love, music, with technology, writing, math, and reading than to have them create a "Soundtrack to their lives"? It is my goal to have each one of my students create a CD full of songs that represent them and the obstacles that they encounter. They will have to use math to determine how many songs they can fit on a CD. They will have to write about why they chose the songs they did, and what it is about the lyrics that they connect to. Each student will be able to take aways a CD that they have made, one that means something to them, one they they have put together.
You can make it possible for my students to put their own spin on music by donating musical cds, blank cds, a cd player and storage unit. Through you it will possible for them to have something that they can call their own, something that represent them.
