Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Trenton, New Jersey, is (and this is amazing!) a sanctuary city. Students from nations all over the world immigrate to Trenton with their families. The city, although economically poor in many areas, is rich in cultures and heritage from all corners of the world. We have a growing population of Hispanic immigrants, most speaking their native language Spanish. We want to make sure that they are able to participate in as many hands-on, engaging activities as possible! This is why I want to learn soundscape ecology - even if students have a difficult time understanding my language, we can connect them to their environment and the natural world through sound! I am requesting learning texts and a piano to teach myself soundscape listening and recording. Students will be able to listen and record, too!

The items I am requesting will help me to learn soundscape ecology so that I can implement Ecosystem Listening Labs that have been developed by Purdue University in my class, including things like sound walks, sound capture, and natural song matching.

The mission: The world around us is full of amazing sounds that are often ignored by humans. Unfortunately, many of the sources of these sounds are actually in danger of being destroyed by human activities. The mission is to raise awareness about soundscapes and to encourage the younger generation to open their ears and become soundscapers! More broadly, I aim to interest students in nature and science through the wonder of natural sounds. Earth has about a dozen major terrestrial biomes, and the mission is to discover how soundscapes vary across time and space within each of these major biomes.
