This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember humming your favorite nursery rhyme, or singing the ABC's to help you alphabetize? My students are new to the English language and hearing the rhythms and beats of music will help them build fluency and intonation in their reading and writing.

Our school is an urban dual language school in New York State with students from a variety of countries.

They are inquisitive and bright boys and girls who often lack the exposure and enrichment of music, as a result of language barriers and economic circumstances.

My Project

My students need a listening center junction box, a multicultural CD library and musical chimes. I plan to use the CD and musical chimes to create a welcoming atmosphere which will excite and motivate my students to learn. When they enter the classroom, and during various periods of the day, I plan to play music to help relax my students and create a fun learning environment. I will use the songs on the CD to support our social studies curriculum, which focuses on family and community. The rhythms of the music will enhance my students' ability to recognize rhymes and patterns when reading books. The junction box will allow them to listen to books independently and apply what they have learned.
