My Students

In my science lab, we always try to focus on critical thinking and collaboration while sifting through the science content at each grade level K-5. We do mostly hands-on activities. Wouldn't it be great if we could also fuse our science teaching with creative thinking as well?

I teach science to all grades, K-5, at our small elementary school.

The students come to the science lab once a week for one hour each visit. Our school has a wide range of students in its population. We serve neighborhood children, military families, and students from areas of higher poverty that ride the bus to our school by choice. We have a large percentage of free and reduced lunch students and many English language learners. Over the last few years, our military family population has grown significantly! Over half of our students have parents serving our country. While our elementary classrooms focus on all academic areas, my science lab is dedicated to the enrichment and enjoyment of science.

My Project

While students have their individual interests in science, nothing brings the class together more than having animals in our science lab. The aquarium is the perfect venue for making observations of animal structure and behaviors, but also offers an opportunity to relate their observations to ecosystems and environmental sciences. In addition to the science learning, having an aquarium also adds a feeling of calm and peacefulness.

Having an aquatic environment to plan, research, build, watch, draw, and write about will help students have an investment in our science lab environment, and encourage our children to develop a sense of stewardship toward our small ecosystem that will hopefully evolve into a similar protection of our global environment.
