Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school, a New York City public school in the Bronx, I teach AP Computer Science and Intro to Programming to high school seniors. My students have responded really well to the curriculum and we have increased our level of participation in these courses over the last 4 years.

In my AP CS course last year, we doubled enrollment to two full sections.

Seeing people that my students can connect with represented in my physical classroom space and curriculum is key. Last year we celebrated that 66% of my students who took my AP CS class identify as female, 71% identify as Hispanic/Latinx, 26% identify as Black, and 3% identify as Asian. In my curriculum, we are focusing on social justice in tech, what it means to be a digital citizen and what the inalienable rights of digital citizens should be.

In my Intro to Programming elective, my students learn JavaScript and how to draw and animate on the computer, culminating in an animated short film festival, in the winter. My students also learn HTML & CSS in the Spring and create dynamic web pages using adobe creative suite and other web builders.

My Project

With air purifiers in my room at full blast, KN95 masks, and ambient NYC street noise coming in through the open windows for ventilation, communication has become a real challenge at times in my classroom. At the end of the day, my voice is often gone.

These HomePod Minis and HDMI cables would allow me to sync audio from my SmartBoard to two separate hubs in my room to enable the projection of audio and to allow me to use them as an intercom for my Computer Science lectures.

Along with CC, this projection of SmartBoard content will benefit all of my students including my ENL students and my students with IEPs, as not being able to hear the content and communicate easily has proved incredibly problematic for concept mastery.

Streaming whole class content for discussions, like Computer Science videos for the ethics portion of my class, and student created Animated Short Films using JavaScript has also been difficult as the audio is very challenging to hear with all the extra distracting noises as we attempt to keep everyone safe amid the pandemic.
