My Students

Remember how the movies could lift your heart with the swell of the orchestra during a pivotal romantic moment. Can you forget the tension of Spielberg's Da-Dum, Da-Dum from the cello notes in Jaws. My students can't, not on two broken, mismatched boombox speakers picked up at a garage sale.

My students represent America in the way that defines our country.

They are from everywhere in the world and many, if not most, have a story of family struggle in their recent history that brought them to our shores. Stories are important to them, but they are from a technological generation that insists on sounds and sights in impressive tandem to be made meaningful.

My Project

Film is a medium of excruciating detail. Sound is an integral part of its execution, which is often lost alongside its visual companion. With a home theater surround system, students will clearly hear the whispered conversation of two lovers or a team of conspirators, They will experience the awe from a meteor crash or the hammering staccato of a rock soundtrack that accompanies a breathless car chase through cobblestone streets. A home theater either rivets students to their seats or makes them jump from them. It is the element that makes cinema truly come alive. It all too often lost in the classroom.

A home theater system will enliven the classroom experience.

I am the only cinema teacher at our high school, and I have used every resource, both public and private to keep this class going. The system I've chosen has Wi-Fi, which will allow streaming of online video resources, which is important to all my classes. It will grant me an entre to vast film libraries thus freeing me from having physically custody of a video resource in order for students to have access to them.
