My Students

Imagine the Little Rascals' homemade musical instruments.... That's what my classroom sounds like, and its music to my ears! My first graders are taking this into modern sound engineering by testing and analyzing the pitch and volume of their instruments with digital sound engineering tools.

Our school is an innovative public school that is strongly based in science, technology, engineering, and math.

We use project-based learning instead of lecture to inspire our students to explore and discover the world we live in, and the world we want it to become. My first grade students are full of energy, inquiry, excitement, curiosity, and joy about learning. We are constantly pushing the boundaries of what 6-year olds are 'capable' of doing.

My Project

In our study of sound, students are challenged to design and engineer musical instruments that can play more than one pitch, and produce varied volumes. We will use the decibel level meters to measure the volumes each instrument can be played at. We will take the mathematical data and chart the results, and publish our findings in an instructional booklet on "How To Build A Musical Instrument".

The use of these decibel meters will enable my students to go far beyond the basic experience of plucking rubber bands, or clanging pots and pans.

These tools will allow my students to be real sound engineers and better understand the science behind sound waves, how our ears perceive sounds, and how to alter sound volumes.
