My Students

This project was inspired by S.O.S.! (Solar Offers Sustainability) Part 2 written by Mrs. Yokoyama. We have many choices for how we acquire energy, but one option may be the best... Solar Energy! Why?...It is a viable source of energy that is completely renewable, sustainable, and free to harvest!

Our school is a wonderful place filled with bright students.

As with many children, they do not have many opportunities to learn about current events with age appropriate material on their reading level. Approximately 80% of our students are eligible for free or reduced priced meals. Although they may lack the advantages of peers from more affluent settings, they do not lack for energy and enthusiasm! Our school is a small neighborhood school in an urban setting.

My Project

You may have heard of the Indianapolis 500… we are going to have the Solar Powered 500 by making solar powered cars. As with any project, it will start with developing our content knowledge. We’ll be reading books (including Solar Power) to increase our understanding of the topic. Then we will turn our room into a General Motors type environment by designing and building solar powered cars. Think back to the teamwork involved with the Ford brothers… we’ll also have true collaboration! We’ll have charging and radio stations with the solar radio and panel charger in case power is not available. Our school’s commitment to the common core will come alive as students will not only immerse themselves in science, but also dive into complex text and content reading. We’ll hone our presentation skills by having students create ways to show how the design of their cars is best.

Demographics should not equal destiny.

Although many of my students come from impoverished backgrounds, they should get equal access to the type of scientific lessons that will inspire them to reach for the stars!
