My Students

Some people are born with silver spoons but my students are economically disadvantaged. My goal is to increase my students reading levels and create a strong foundation in literacy so they are not limited by their circumstances. The challenge I face is a lack of resources and funding.

Curious, supportive, entertaining and most of all, full of potential; these are just some of the words that I would use to describe my amazing second graders.

However, that potential cannot be fully realized due to the fact that the neighborhood they live in is so impoverished and the school is poorly funded. Though the Title One school I work in attempts to meet their needs, ultimately we fall short because we don't have nearly enough of what they need. My students have the desire to learn and are ambitious. Lack of funding shouldn't hold them back. I see beyond their smiles and I want to give them the opportunity to succeed In their education despite the lack of resources. I want to provide them with additional materials to give them an academic edge that their environment doesn't provide. My students are eager to do well, this desire needs to be groomed in order maximize their learning. Their potential should not be stifled.

My Project

Victor Hugo once said "To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark." My goal is to create a classroom environment that sparks my students to read. Currently half of my students are reading on a first grade level, by the end of this year my goal is to have them reading on a third grade level. I plan to increase their levels by exposing students to the leveled books that you provide. Using the bean bags, I'll create a comfortable area in the class where reading is fun. Once I've received the materials I will create a classroom library and generate booklists that are geared towards their interests and will help spark their love of reading. Completion of these books lists will help students feel accomplished as well as help them create a strong foundation in reading. They check out chart will give them the opportunity to check out books. Students are lights that need to be fueled. Your funding provides the fuel necessary to spark the fire within.

This project will make a difference because it will close the reading gap for students in my class and also prepare the students for the 3rd grade testing level.

If students are not proficient in reading it is directly correlated to their testing. By building strong foundational reading skills I intend to increase their chances to make greater strides to success. Your funds will help these students create a strong foundation. It may not seem like much, but this donation will have many ripples.
