My Students

I teach 4th - 8th grade in San Diego. My students are creative and thoughtful. They come to our school because we use the arts to teach leadership. In addition to leadership skills, we purposefully infuse math, science, history, and language arts skills into our lessons.

My students genuinely care about the environment and relish the chance to take up an environmental cause.

I want to give them a voice to express those concerns.

Our students love experiencing the crossovers between all of the curricula. In fact, when you walk into our classroom, it's difficult to discern if you are in an art, or math or science class.

My Project

My goal is for my students to do what great scientists and mathematicians do; they closely observe the world to make sense out of it.

Your donation will afford us the projector and paints we need in order to transform student designs into large scale pieces.

We will use the projector to transfer student designs onto our walls for this project and multiple future projects. The projector allows students to see and reproduce their designs on a large scale. After that, they can accurately paint their designs on our garden walls.

This year my students will study native endangered flora and fauna and craft a written proposal to persuade their classmates which threatened species they think need the most attention and why.

Students will create designs highlighting threatened native species. Critical thinking skills, mathematics, and collaboration will be key as students will read each other's proposals and work together to determine the species whose need is most critical.

They will create a series of murals based on the research they perform and the species they chose. They will measure all outdoor areas to be painted to calculate square footage their chosen paint will cover. They will also create signage that gives critical information about each species they chose.

With this project, my students will collaborate to champion a cause and use their scientific knowledge and mathematics skills to create a visually accurate but beautiful and informative public piece, all while working in the great outdoors!
