Help me give my students a little nutrition. I'm implementing the S.O.S. feeding therapy (Sequential Order Sequence.) These food items will help me introduce new flavors and will encourage the student to try new foods.

My Students

My students are part of a cross-categorical, self-contained, special education K-2 class. Many of these students come from broken homes or have parents who struggle to engage in the academic process. I love my students because every day they come to school ready to learn and give me their very best effort, despite the difficulties they face from day to day.

I currently have one student who will only eat 3 foods and 2 drinks.

The only food he will eat is Oreos, licorice, and chips. The only thing he will drink is red fruit punch or Capri Suns. I am implementing the SOS feeding strategy in an attempt to broaden his dietary horizons and provide a little more nutrition.

My Project

I am building a food unit for my class to support the S.O.S. feeding therapy. The unit will include a sequential writing lesson on how to make a smoothie. The P.E. teacher will also teach a special lesson on healthy food choices. Then we will actually build our own smoothie. Finally, we will work through the sequential order of the S.O.S. feeding therapy to introduce a new food to our students. While on the surface, this request may seem insignificant, this is actually a piece to a very difficult puzzle. Food aversions are very common with children with a sensory processing disorder and there are a plethora of factors that contribute to the feeding experience, including sensory issues. Lack of nutrition plays an incredible role in a child's ability to access an education. Addressing these critical issues will most likely be successful when a positive mealtime experience is provided. This unit is intended to help these students improve their nutrition levels as well as help their brains develop and help them access the curriculum to a greater degree.
