Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

English is challenging to learn to read and write. Phonics rules are inconsistent, spelling patterns are numerous, and there are exceptions to every rule. It's my job to help my students learn all of it. This is tricky for anyone, and so the challenge is compounded with second-language learners.

Our school is high-need because of our high percentages of ESL students (85%) and poverty (94% free lunch).

Levels of familial support vary, making my job, sometimes feel more like parenting than teaching. Nonetheless, we work hard every day to get our students as far as they can go.

My Project

Daily, we practice building, writing, and reading words. One of my favorite techniques for this is using magnetic letters. Currently, we do this just building on the table. I have long wanted magnetic boards so that I can have materials prepared and mobile. These boards would allow students to work more efficiently and accurately, accelerating their learning. They can build spelling words, write phonics lists, mix-and-match.... Because the boards are dry erase and magnetic, it allows them a multi-modal approach to learning words. With this one word, they will read, write, build, mix, and fix. By approaching it from a few methods, it will hopefully be remembered better.

With these boards, my students have more interesting opportunities to apply their learning.

They will be using their skills in different ways, solidifying what they know, and learning new. It will also allow me to create more targeted, independent learning activities for students to practice skills. I believe that these boards will help make learning more fun, more effective, and more engaging to a wider range of students.
