My Students

My diverse twenty-eight first graders are the most eager learners I have ever met. These six- and seven-year-olds come to school every day with a desire to learn despite the many obstacles they face. For one, our school is over a hundred years old, so the building we work in has many issues. Our school is in a high-poverty district with little support for technology, books, and necessary classroom supplies.

No matter what, my students are hardworking and dedicated, and they strive to be excellent model citizens.

It is because of these extraordinary students that I work as hard as I do to provide them with the best opportunities. They deserve it!

My Project

This summer I have been immersing myself in research to find ways to get my students back on track with reading thanks to the pandemic. Upon my research, I have learned the importance of the Science of Reading. My classroom will need an overhaul particularly with the books that will be needed in order to become successful readers.

These decodable books will be the answer to help revamp our classroom library and will allow my students the opportunity to practice and master the phonics skills we are working on throughout the year.

While I plan to create and implement lessons that incorporate phonemic awareness and phonics skills, my students will truly benefit from these decodable books both during independent practice and small group.
