My Students

At my Title 1 school, where 100% of those enrolled qualify for free meals, students are often stereotyped as disengaged and apathetic towards learning. Though this can appear to be true at times, it is far from the whole story.

Children need to move their bodies in order to best utilize their brains.

Particularly in today’s world, where the average child’s attention span lasts barely 7 minutes, the requirement to sit still in hard, rigid seats while a teacher drones at the front of a classroom is outdated and ineffective.

Center-based and flexible-seating classrooms have produced exceptions results in curbing misbehavior, promoting engagement, and maximizing opportunities for small group instruction. Particularly for those with learning disabilities and/or ADHD, these learning tools and systems are essential for helping students grow to their potential.

My students are animated, energetic and inquisitive. Under the right conditions, they are motivated to learn, try new things, and push themselves to new depths of understanding. As a teacher, I believe that providing them with those conditions starts with designing a classroom setup that gives them freedom to move in a structured way.

My Project

As a self-contained class, finding safe and structured outlets for my students to move around while staying engaged in learning activities can be a challenge. Wobble seats are a simple tool that are amazingly effective at giving students the ability to get out their wiggles without causing a disruption. These can be used at their desks during instruction, or taken to a designated rug or floor mat for alternative seating during independent and group work. Dry erase clipboards give them a stable surface to write on when not at their desks.

Studies show that incorporating movement into lessons helps learners retain 10% more information than if sitting still!

Today's students spend more time inside the classroom than every before. Rather than work harder to maintain mediocre results, I want to help my students study smarter by using their bodies with their brains for maximum learning results.
