Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. I have second-language learners, native English speakers, autistic students, struggling readers, avid readers, ADD and ADHD students, and students from low-class families. Many of the students added throughout the school year have been displaced from their homes in Puerto Rico because of Hurricane Maria.

At my school, the motto is "Live, Dream, Achieve".

My students know that wherever they come from has little bearing on where they're going. As long as they work hard, they can have whatever life they want. This applies especially to the students who are new to the country.

It is up to them and the choices they make to help them succeed. We have high academic and behavior expectations and they rise to meet the challenges set before them.

My Project

As we start preparing for the state tests, the students are getting more and more nervous as the countdown begins. I feel that if I was able to shift their learning into the PSSA Finish Line Science 8th grade workbook, the students, and myself, would be more at ease. It is difficult, as a science teacher, to fill the gaps between their 4th grade test and their 8th grade test. Therefore, I scramble to find different examples and scenarios to give them the knowledge they need to be able to answer the state test questions.

The PSSA Finish Line Science 8th grade workbook will allow the students to see what is coming next and enable me to plan more effectively to make my students more successful.

I want to also use the PSSA prep books to help my new students ease into the new curriculum of their new country. The PSSA Finish Line Science 8th grade books have much less reading which allows me to translate the book easier for my students. My goal is to make all students as comfortable as possible with their science knowledge so the days they sit down to take their test they have no worries about their ability.
