Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a drama teacher for a middle school in Astoria, New York. I absolutely love my job and I am very thankful that we have both drama and visual arts as part of our curriculum. The one major component that our arts program is missing is music, which, in many ways, is what our students probably relate to the most. While doing some research on how I can incorporate music into my drama program, I discovered Lincoln Center Theater's program called Songwriting in the Schools. It is a fantastic opportunity to have professional teaching artists come to our school and work with my students in order for them to write their own songs. At the end of the program, their songs are each recorded on a CD for the student to take home, and their songs are performed by professional artists in a showcase! I know this would be a wonderful opportunity for each student involved. I am positive that my students will shine in their songwriting skills. They all love a variety of musical genres, but this will expose them to the craft behind some of their favorite songs. Moreover, I know that working through songwriting will undoubtedly enhance their songwriting skills. Their skills will also help them to become more involved in my musical theater program, which will, in turn, lead to other opportunities in the arts. I am very passionate about my drama program and I want my students to be exposed to a variety of experiences in the arts. Thank you very much for helping to make this dream a reality.
