Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in an inner city public school in Massachusetts serving 509 students in grades PK-4. The department of education statistics show that 82% of our population have high needs and that 77% of our families earn low income. Additionally, 18% are English language learners and another 4% are "newcomers" with little or no English skills. I am proud to be a member of a staff that is kind and nurturing. We work together, and it is our goal to make the kids feel as if they are part of a family. Kids like coming to school. We push them to do their best.

During weekly music classes students are engaged in creating, performing, and responding to music.

Activities including, singing, playing instruments, listening and moving to music. Students are also given opportunities on a regular basis to improvise and compose both vocal and instrumental music. My students love coming to music class!

My Project

Reading to children provides an opportunity to show them how interesting books are. It is important to read high-quality literature to develop sensitivities for the expressive potential of stories. Reading with appropriate expression brings the stories to life. SongTales are song stories and are used for the same purpose in music class. Because of the many words in SongTales, these songs are sung with proper expressive qualities by the teacher for young children. The SongTales that I sing for my students as part of John Feierabend's "First Steps in Music Curriculum" are excellent examples of folk music literature. Not only will SongTales help develop listening skills, but they can provide an opportunity for children to hear the expressiveness music should include.

Initially, SongTales are introduced aurally to evoke more attentive listening.

After hearing the song a few times, picture books can help students to understand the vocabulary, setting and content of the song and can help bring the story to life. Our newcomers, English language learners and students of all ages will enjoy and benefit from having access to these beautiful books.
