Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is in the southern portion of Florida, only miles from the lush saw-grass of the Everglades. Typically, students spend their day studying animal science, as they are considered teen zoologist. A typical day includes a couple of hours at the zoo, taking advanced or honors subjects like algebra or geometry and playing an instrument in band, orchestra or keyboard.

Music creates engaging learning experiences that promote 21st century knowledge and skill acquisition, according to the Partnership for 21st Century Learning.

Keyboard students examine how composers, artists, playwrights use arts to communicate particular ideas, themes, or concepts and to evoke particular emotions or feelings. An after school keyboard class has been established after school to sustaining the whole student and building on their creative juices of students that are not part of a music class during the school day. The Accentuate The Positive curriculum is being used to teach music composition

Our school's cultural landscape is 47% Hispanic, 46% African-American and 7% White with over 95% eligible for free and/or reduced price lunch.

My Project

There are three piano/keyboard classes and a new after-school songwriting program that is using the John Mercer Foundation’s “Accentuate the Positive” curriculum. Each student is provided a book that carefully follows the art of songwriting and the history of John Mercer and his amazing colleagues.

The immediate and long term impact of the keyboards will improve the student’s knowledge, understanding, focus and skill of songwriting on a new instrument.

The instructor will be able to demonstrate the proper playing technique with enough keyboards for every student. Additionally, students will learn sound production skills in the mini sound recording studio created with a Donors Choose grant.
