Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine 25 kindergarten students joyously singing to celebrate the start of a new day. I get to begin each morning to the sound of their little voices, and they bring this energy with them throughout the course of the day as they learn to become proficient in both Spanish and English through our dual language program. We are an Expeditionary Learning school that leads students through the inquiry process to become experts in their science studies!

I teach kindergarten at a progressive dual language school in Washington Heights, New York.

Washington Heights is a primarily Dominican neighborhood where many of my students are immigrants and speak Spanish at home. I have an integrated classroom, meaning that 25-40% of my students have special needs. Despite the various needs of my students, each child is supported to take ownership of their learning and achieve their goals. I believe that it is my job to empower young learners to become change-makers who advocate for themselves and others. My students are incredibly curious and eager to learn!

My Project

My students LOVE to read. We read books aloud to them each day to inspire their sense of curiosity. They also get to bring a book from the classroom home with them each night to increase their access to high quality reading time with their families.

We need more high interest books and Spanish language books to captivate our kids!

Our kids are bilingual and it is incredibly important that we give our kids access to the same amount of excellent books in Spanish as we do in English. The majority of the books included in this order are fun, beautiful, and engaging Spanish language books. The English texts will be used to continue to grow our empathy, tolerance and advocacy for a safe and nurturing classroom!
