My Students

Many students are not exposed to the life cycle of an animal. They also do not realize where their food comes from. Through this project, students will raise chicks, and see the life cycle of the chicken. They will understand what it takes to run a business and what chickens need to be healthy.

My students are from a rural community.

We serve fifth and sixth grades, consisting of 36 classrooms in a 103,000 square foot building. We have three title one schools that feed into our intermediate school. Many of our students are from a single family income and single parent home. Our Intermediate School has the charm of a small village with the hustle and bustle of a large metropolis. Its charm comes from hall groupings of students and the attention that is given to caring for the whole child--physical, mental, and social. Students learn to care for others through service learning projects and to care for themselves through Character Education programs.

My Project

Through this project of raising chickens, students will learn to care for animals. They will research what type of nesting box is best suited for laying eggs, the proper feed and best nutrition for their chick, and the right temperature for hatching their eggs. This will empower the students and give them a sense of responsibility and achievement. Students take pride in their classroom, work, and environment. The animals reflect their involvement. I have requested Chicken Eggs, Biddy Farm, which includes the incubator and brooder, and a Chicken Life Cycle Exploration Set. Students can each get an egg to hatch and raise through out the school year. If parents approve, they can take it home to continue to care for it and determine if their nesting box will help the chicken produce more eggs. The incubator is large which automatically regulates the temperature and turn the eggs. We have tried doing this manually with very poor results. I would like students to see success.

This project gives our students a chance to have something to belong to them.

They can take responsibility for another living being. We have done this project on a small scale for two years with hatching one to two eggs each year. We would like to expand the project to give more children the opportunity to be involved and let students take control of the project. Students have been very enthusiastic about this so far and have done much research as to the type of eggs they would like to hatch
