Some Basic Artistic School Supplies for Students in Need

My students need colored construction paper, colored pencils, pencil sharpeners, and printer ink cartridges.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I teach 9th grade Social Studies and Health Sciences in an urban-school district. The school I teach at is situated in a low-income community, and 100% of my students qualify for reduced-priced/free lunch. The school is 99.5% African American and is severely academically underperforming.

As I mentioned above, most of my students come from low-income families. Because of this, affording school supplies can sometimes be a very difficult task. My students don't have flashy backpacks, cell phones, or iPods - many times they don't have basic supplies like construction paper, colored pencils, or even a pencil sharpener. When students don't have supplies that just places one more obstacle in front of their learning. Students can feel disheartened, unmotivated, and embarrassed. Indeed, not having any art supplies in the classroom can stifle creativity and decrease students' self-esteem. Having construction paper and colored pencils available in the classroom for all students, regardless of income, will remove that barrier to learning. Students will be able to have all the supplies they need to learn the material, and will have one less stumbling block in the way.

Having construction paper and colored pencils available in the classroom for all students, regardless of income, will remove that barrier to learning. Students will be able to have all the supplies they need to learn the material, and will have one less stumbling block in the way. Students will be able to express their views on the material by creating interesting and engaging art projects. We will be able to use the ink cartridges to print off assignments, homework, review material, and progress reports so students will be able to achieve in our academic area. We'll use the colored pencils and construction paper for class projects on the material and decorations, bringing an academic and artistic flare to our classroom.

You will make it possible for my students to come into the classroom ready to learn from the very first instant, with an artistic flare. You will make it possible for them to create colorful projects to enhance their learning.
