My students are some of the hardest working people you will ever meet. They are in high school and have special needs. Each of my students consistently amazes me by finding ways to overcome their learning barriers in order to succeed in their schooling. They truly enjoy learning and all have ambitions to go to work after high school.
My school is geared towards teaching life and career skills that will help promote the most independent lives possible for my students.
We focus on activities of daily living and a job readiness curriculum.
My Project
My students have special-needs and many come from low SES households. My students also come from diverse backgrounds. Thinking about the makeup of our government my students and their households are traditionally under-represented in local, state and national government. I want to teach my students that they can make a difference in the world. I am asking for a subscription to Scholastic Action magazine to teach them about national news stories. I will be supplementing these national stories with hyper-local stories from their own community. I will then ask my students to choose a story that inspires or enrages them. I will have them identify the problem that is brought up in the news story and have them think about various underlying issues that might have caused that problem. They will then think about possible solutions that can chip at that root cause.
My students will then take the solutions they generated and write a bill that addressees the root cause of a problem and submit it to their local government representative to review.
I will also try to set up a virtual meeting with a local representative so that students can talk about their ideas for a better community. I will invite parents to attend this virtual meeting as well so that they can see what their child has helped to create. I will also hand out voting registration forms or links so all eligible parents and students alike can register to vote if they want to.
I am asking for the subscripting to Scholastic Action magazine, a bill writing book, an iPhone holder and charger in order to help turn my phone into a document camera, poster paper, and markers to help make this dream project a reality.
