My Students

Here in 9th grade Biology, we cover a lot of really interesting and amazing concepts. We have a lot of success preparing the kids for standardized testing and teaching them the basics, but one area we fall short in is wet labs. According to our standards, we should be spending 40% of our class time doing laboratory style activities. However, we rarely achieve that. We simply don't have supplies for most experiments and our school is currently unable to purchase much for us, as we are building a brand new building (our old one was built in the 1960s).

My Project

These hands-on laboratory activities, Carolina Synthetic Blood: DNA Models and Plant and Animal Cell Models make it real to my students. Manipulating each model and activity will be an engaging, wonderful learning opportunities for my Biology students. They will help my students next year in two areas where past students always struggle. Unfortunately, it's tough to visualize the tough concepts involved in genetics.

By letting them actually experiment and work with these hands-on activities, my students will be able to more easily wrap their mind around the concepts of cells, cycles and genetics.

I'm excited to be able to focus the learning on nucleic acids and how they change so much of how organisms function. Understanding DNA and genetics is becoming more and more critical in today's society.

Besides that, the DNA modeling kit and cell models are reusable, which means several generations of students can benefit from this investment.
