Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Creating something unique is so much richer than simply building. Students in the Maker Shop create unique electronics and robotics inventions, and learn wiring and soldering in the process. But soldering can be really tough, especially without the right tools.

Our school is an incredible mix of students from different backgrounds who all come together to make incredible things in the Maker Shop!

About 60% of our students are Latino and about the same percentage are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Being in the middle of Marin county, there is a middle-class and affluent population as well, making for a truly diverse student body. Students in the Shop Technology, Exploring Technology, Computer Technology, and Maker Club programs exercise both the technical and the creative/design parts of their brain to fabricate functional and beautiful creations.

My Project

Our students love to invent electronic devices - from interactive robots to devices for the home. But soldering can be really tough, especially without the right tools. Many students creating electronics projects struggle with encrusted soldering tips, their projects moving around while working, and simply not being able to see clearly what they are doing. With the addition of magnifier lamps, vices and tip cleaners, students will spend less time wrestling with their solder and more time refining their invention designs.

These additional tools at our soldering stations would make the difficult task of soldering their projects much more approachable - freeing up our young inventors from much of the avoidable frustration and unleashing their young engineering brains.
