Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

SOLAR POWER! There are many energy problems facing our world today and our students need hands - on experiences to help them understand the future of energy.

We are doing a unit on energy and alternative energy sources.

We want students to have hands-on experience with alternative energy sources, such as hydrogen fuel and solar energy. Currently, transportation is a major consumer of fossil fuels. Students will understand that alternative fuel sources are viable sources of energy to power our cars, buses, trains, and planes. We want students to be educated in the alternative energy sources that their generation will be utilizing. We have done this unit in the past without these supplies and it felt like it was missing the hands-on aspect that would engage the students in the actual chemistry behind the technology. We are planning on using these class sets for many years to come.

My Project

At the end of our semester, we want to hold an alternative energy car race. The students will be designing their own cars based on basic physics principles (friction, drag, aerodynamics). The students will also understand chemistry through how solar energy and hydrogen fuel cells work to move their cars. We will be covering chemistry topics such as battery chemistry, combustion vs. solar power, fuel cell mechanics and chemical processes and reactions. Our goal as a science department at New Design is to have our students be well versed in the scientific method. Hands-on experience with making their own procedures for building their cars, forming their own hypotheses about how the design will affect the speed of the car, and analyzing their data will help to cement the scientific method as a cornerstone of science and engineering. Using relevant science and sparking an interest in science in our students will help our students to thrive as they continue on with their education.

My students do not have access to many materials that other high school students have access to.

I do not want them to go to college without having as rich of a high school experience as they deserve. This project will give them a first-hand experience that will hopefully excite them about science and technology. In addition, it will give them critical knowledge to help them become informed adults who can make important choices about the future of energy in our world.
